If you would like to see an example of the widening gap
between secularists and mainstream Christianity, then read the article by
Charles M. Blow (here). In the article Mr. Blow takes great pains to use a poll
conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Religion & Public Life Project to
paint Christians as a dysfunctional social ailment at best, and at worst, as a
part of a cynical ploy by the Republican Party to keep their base in the
conservative fold. Mr. Blow allows that he has no problem with religion as long
as it is “not used to impose outdated mores on others.”
Mr. Blow follows the standard methodology for liberal
thought regarding Christianity. He believes Christianity is fine as long as it
does nothing to interfere with the liberal mindset and agenda. When it does, he
labels it bigotry and ignorance. Mr. Blow states, “I don’t personally have a problem with religious faith, even in the
extreme, as long as it doesn’t supersede science and it’s not used to impose
outdated mores on others.”
What he really means is that religion is fine as long as it
fits into a neat little box that meets all of the liberal requirements of the
day. What Mr. Blow believes Christian faith should be is a once a week social
club; a weekly gathering of the ignorant who sing and praise God; a group of
people with a similar dysfunctional disorder; a group of people who do not
believe as he does. In an odd way Mr. Blow is right. Christians have chosen to
be set apart, to forsake what the world has to offer and to place our trust and
our faith in Jesus Christ. We pray he will eventually join us.
